Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM).
The third committee of the United Nations General Assembly closely investigates matters such as the advancement of women and the treatment of refugees. Through considering draft resolutions on social matters, SOCHUM seeks to improve the conditions of life for all, especially the more marginalised groups of people found in the world. At least one topic discussed by this body at OxIMUN 2017 will concern gender equality and female empowerment.
Topic A: Media Censorship and The Treatment of Journalists
Topic B: The issue of Female Genital Mutilation.
Meet your chairs
My name is Natalie Chung, and I’m originally from the sunny city of Singapore and have spent the last two years studying in the UK. Come September, I will (hopefully) be starting my degree in International Relations having just completed my A Levels in the UK. I have been doing MUN for almost five years, taking a short hiatus this year to focus on my exams, participating in over a dozen conferences in the capacity of a Delegate, Chair, and Secretariat member in multiple countries and continents.
In my spare time, I enjoy watching movies, reading and finding the best sticky date pudding. Apart from that, I am passionate about exploring and hope to one day visit all six inhabited continents. I am so excited to be Chairing at OxIMUN this year and meeting you all for what I know will be a fruitful debate!
Karle De Volder
My name is Karle and together with Natalie I’ll be Chairing SOCHUM at OxIMUN this year.
I’m a 25-year-old Belgian with degrees in Sociology, World Religions and Arabic and Islamic Studies.
I’ve been active in MUN’s for a little over two years now, first as a delegate in VUBMUN, the MUN team of the Free University of Brussels, and then as part of its Board last year.
Over the summer I also dipped my toe in the world of the real United Nations, as I interned for the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management at the UN Headquarters in New York for about three months.
I first attended OxIMUN as a delegate, and then returned as a Faculty Adviser. I’m thus very excited to now return for a third and last time, this time as a Chair.
I’m looking forward to meeting you all in the gorgeous city of Oxford!
