Advanced committees are for delegates who have vast experience in MUN and have a firm grasp on its rules of procedure. This year, the Advanced committees will feature interconnectivity, which requires the coordination of delegations across different assemblies. Consisting of UN, regional and international organisations with a both political and economic focus, they will be linked by the theme of “The Future of International Petroleum Trading.” Despite a discursive international shift towards Economically Sustainable Economies and structures oil is still the largest export of many powerful nations. And in 2018 the majority of large developed nations saw oil/fuel among their top 5 imported goods, often equalling to over $200 billion worth of oil imported per state. As the globalized system hides from its fuel driven reality in order to save face, delegates in advanced committees will continue assessing the political and economic ramifications of this trade and will not shy away from discussing its reform openly.
Intermediate committees are for delegates who have some experience in MUN and are comfortable with the basic rules of procedure. This year, the Intermediate committees will feature interconnectivity, which requires the coordination of delegations across different assemblies. Consisting of UN, regional and international organisations with an economic focus, they will be linked by the theme of “Challenging Global Financial Interests”, which examines issues such as the growing inequality produced by neoliberal economic and financial policies as well as the problem of overseas tax havens and offshore investments exposed by the Panama and Paradise Papers.
If you are a new delegate or do not have much experience in terms of MUN, the following committees are designed to accommodate members such as yourself. To preserve accessibility in the conference, OxIMUN will be simulating six beginner level committees that will run independent of Interconnectivity. The following committees cover the main principle organs of the United Nations and will be looking at a variety of topics whilst keeping the theme of ‘Trade and Development’ in mind.
Unlike regular MUN Committees, the Joint Cabinet Crisis operates in a more fast paced and dynamic manner with each delegate representing a character within a historical time period rather than a nation. In OxIMUN, the JCC will feature three cabinets and will run akin to UK-style crises.
